Snoop the Man Can Act
by, Al Pathy 8/26/05
We come now to praise the quality and versatility of
Calvin Broadus, a.k.a. Snoop Dogg. But it is not
Mr., Broadus' rapping or musical abilities to which
these adjectives apply -- he has a one-dimensional,
laid back flow which rides his old-school, west-coast
beats -- rather his acting. In "Training
Day" and "Starsky and Hutch", Dee Oh
Double Gee shows he can get both gritty and righteously
silly with equal aplomb.
As the wheelchair-bound crack pusher in "Training
Day", Snoop gave an additional jolt of electricity
to the already high-powered performances of Denzel Washington
and Ethan Hawke. The scene where he puked up the
crack rocks after credibly denying he had them showed
he had the dramatic chops to hold his own with an Academy
Award winner.
In "Starsky and Hutch", Snoop "laid it
out" for comedy giants Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson
"to play it out" as the incongruous informant/criminal
Huggy Bear. Watch the glee in his eye when he
takes a pair of fly sunglasses off of prone Vince Vaughn's
head and spits "Now these'll work" or his
hilarious scene as the world's most clueless golf caddy,
also with the brilliant Vaughn.
Hear us now and believe us later, but Mr. Broadus is
headed for a breakout leading role. The man is
good.
