2004 Breeders Cup Selections, by Hans D. Capper - October 20, 2004

On Saturday, October 30, 2004, the 20th Breeders Cup will be run at Lone Star Park in Grand Prairie, Texas. This year we like Afleet Alex to win the Juvenile at odds of about 5-1. The favorite will undoubtedly be Proud Accolade, who is undefeated and coming into the race off an impressive win in Belmont's Champagne Stakes over the very same Afleet Alex. However, a close inspection of that race showed that Alex' chances were compromised in the Champagne by a weaving trip, which is difficult for a 2 year old (which is the age restriction in the Juvenile) to overcome. Nevertheless, Afleet Alex was still closing the gap at the wire and we think with a good trip -- or at least an equally bad one for Proud Accolade -- in the traditionally roughly run race, Alex will boost your bank balance. Our other selections for the Cup are:

Roses in May in the Classic;
Kitten's Joy in the Turf;
Six Perfections in the Mile;
Cajun Beat (nice longshot) in the Sprint;
Balletto in the Juvenile Fillies;
Nebraska Tornado in the Distaff; and
Megahertz in the Filly and Mare Turf.
